Ethical and Eco clothing - organic, fairtrade, sustainable, recycled and chic

There was a time when the mere mention of the word 'eco fashion' made me switch off immediately with its connotations of unstylish hippy like clobber and basic ranges of t shirts, t shirts and yet more t shirts. But for 2010 Eco fashion is likely to be big fashion news as it proves that it is trendy, luxurious and uber stylish and not just desirable for its eco credentials. Don't get me wrong, we all want to the help the planet (don't we?) but we couldn't possibly compromise our style whilst doing so. There has been a gap in the market for eco fashion that stands up on its own design merit and thankfully that gap is now being filled. I am very grateful as it is becoming more difficult to ignore my conscious with the constant bombardment of information about the fashion industries environmental and ethical down fallings.

Take labels like Junky Styling who recycle old tailored pieces into cutting edge innovative urban designs and innovative designers like Lara Miller (in the US) who uses Bamboo, a highly sustainable eco fabric that is also as soft as cashmere and drapes like silk. Other designers like Stella McCartney and retailers have introduced organic lines to compliment their existing lines and give you the perfect guilt free alternative. So here is our guide to some of the coolest places to find eco fashion and if you are worried about the price, don't be, these clothes cost no more than their non ethical/ eco counterparts.

People Tree is the pioneer of Fair Trade and sustainable fashion covering women’s, men’s, children and babies ranges. The products are made to the highest Fairtrade and environmental standards from start to finish and consistently prove that it is possible to wear stylish, exciting and affordable fashion, at the same time as respecting people and planet. We especially love the designer department offering exclusive collections from Eley Kishimoto, Richard Nicoll, Jessica Ogden and Bora Aksu. You will be surprised, very surprised, who knew ethical and eco fashion could look this good?
