Fake fur for Autumn/Winter

There is just something about fake fur that is completely irresistible. It has that sexy, but slightly naughty feel, epitomized by Kate Moss. Wearing fake fur makes you feel the ultimate in sophistication, and it doesn't have to break the bank.

With a number of big-name fashion designers deciding to go fake, fur has become more accessible, cheaper and most importantly, animal friendly. Karl Lagerfeld spoke out at his Chanel Autumn/Winter show in March, “Fake is not chic...but fake fur is.”

Lagerfeld set the bar for fake fur in the A/W shows, featuring an Arctic landscape, made of 240 tons of ice and lots of chilly models. The collection featured shaggy coats and yeti-style all-over-fur boots. While warm, the collection was note quite accessible for day to day life. So how do you incorporate the fake-fur trend into your everyday winter wardrobe?

Well the biggest selling point about the fascination with fake fur is its warmth. You know if you purchase a fur coat it's going to be a warm and comfortable investment. A fake fur coat is the perfect piece to get you through a cold winter. But this look is more Mary-Kate Olsen than Cruella DeVil. If you're going to wear a fake fur coat, stay away from fur in the rest of your outfit, and keep everything else simple.

If all-over fur isn't really your thing, then maybe try a coat or jacket with just a hint of fur. Many high-street stores are featuring coats with a fur trim or collar; just enough to keep your warm but not too mutton-dressed-as-lamb.

Another fantastic trend is the fake fur vest. I am desperate for one of these simply because they are so cute, warm and wearable. I love the thrown-on sexy look they just seem to emanate. They're perfect for this time of year just over a floaty top, or a simple tshirt and jeans, but can be layered over jumpers and warm dresses for when the weather gets a little cooler.

In keeping with the vintage-inspired theme, fur accessories were back in a big way on the runways for this season. Fur-accented bags, fur stoles and fur hats were a perfect complement to a warm winter outfit. Something about a fut hat or stole just oozes 1920s sophistication; think The Great Gatsby on a cold London street. Fur trimmed boots were also featured on the catwalks. While I think they are absolutely gorgeous, I'm not sure how practical high-heeled fur boots would really be when we're ankle deep in snow.

But if fake-fur really isn't your thing, you can get a similar feel simply by adopting some leopard-print into your wardrobe. Leopard has been everywhere the last few months and it isn't going anywhere. Leopard has a sexiness without the overly-showiness of fake fur, but it still has that animal instinct that designers loved for winter.
