Thank goodness it's Autumn!

I am fairly certain that I’m in the minority when I say that I’m happy that summer is over and autumn is most definitely setting in. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the summer, I do; I love the pretty dresses, I’m obsessed with gladiator sandals and I love not having to worry whether my coat matches my outfit; I just enjoy women's fashion trends in the winter and the chance to get all snuggled up even more!

D & G’s alpine-inspired winter wear epitomises the idea behind my love of fall fashion: voluminous cape-style jackets with chunky knitted edges and plenty of room for layering, paired with cosy legging, and yes, some slightly silly boots, but the fact is, they look cosy but still fun, which is the side of winter fashion I enjoy the most.
Often, when thinking of winter fashions, people jump straight in with the idea that A/W immediately means monochromatic knitwear, and deep reds and browns as the colour ‘injection’, but thankfully, this season it seems that the trends are pushing more and more towards the ‘fun’ side of things. Quirky prints were pretty abundant on the catwalks for A/W 10/11, as was a wider than usual range of colours, Burberry Prorsum sent models in several hues of bright greens down the catwalks whilst Richard Nicoll and Bottega Veneta, amongst others, explored all kinds of scarlet hues.
If you are, however, an avid fan of the more reserved colour palette, fear not, as for everyday it is easy to just inject little snippets of colour to the autumnal wardrobe; a pretty printed, or brightly coloured chunky knitted scarf are perfect ways to update a look. On the high street, Miss Selfridge are great for pretty printed accessories, and Topshop always come out with some great knitted pieces.
To my mind, the archetypal winter garment has to be a lovely chunky knitwear piece. I’m still searching for mine for this winter, but I am definitely planning on trips to Zara – wonderful brown toned pieces with some extra length as it gets colder, and quirky features on some such as leatherette elbow patches; and Topshop, whose fairisle style tuxedo collared cardigans will most definitely prove popular with the fashion pack this winter.

Fake fur for Autumn/Winter

There is just something about fake fur that is completely irresistible. It has that sexy, but slightly naughty feel, epitomized by Kate Moss. Wearing fake fur makes you feel the ultimate in sophistication, and it doesn't have to break the bank.

With a number of big-name fashion designers deciding to go fake, fur has become more accessible, cheaper and most importantly, animal friendly. Karl Lagerfeld spoke out at his Chanel Autumn/Winter show in March, “Fake is not chic...but fake fur is.”

Lagerfeld set the bar for fake fur in the A/W shows, featuring an Arctic landscape, made of 240 tons of ice and lots of chilly models. The collection featured shaggy coats and yeti-style all-over-fur boots. While warm, the collection was note quite accessible for day to day life. So how do you incorporate the fake-fur trend into your everyday winter wardrobe?

Well the biggest selling point about the fascination with fake fur is its warmth. You know if you purchase a fur coat it's going to be a warm and comfortable investment. A fake fur coat is the perfect piece to get you through a cold winter. But this look is more Mary-Kate Olsen than Cruella DeVil. If you're going to wear a fake fur coat, stay away from fur in the rest of your outfit, and keep everything else simple.

If all-over fur isn't really your thing, then maybe try a coat or jacket with just a hint of fur. Many high-street stores are featuring coats with a fur trim or collar; just enough to keep your warm but not too mutton-dressed-as-lamb.

Another fantastic trend is the fake fur vest. I am desperate for one of these simply because they are so cute, warm and wearable. I love the thrown-on sexy look they just seem to emanate. They're perfect for this time of year just over a floaty top, or a simple tshirt and jeans, but can be layered over jumpers and warm dresses for when the weather gets a little cooler.

In keeping with the vintage-inspired theme, fur accessories were back in a big way on the runways for this season. Fur-accented bags, fur stoles and fur hats were a perfect complement to a warm winter outfit. Something about a fut hat or stole just oozes 1920s sophistication; think The Great Gatsby on a cold London street. Fur trimmed boots were also featured on the catwalks. While I think they are absolutely gorgeous, I'm not sure how practical high-heeled fur boots would really be when we're ankle deep in snow.

But if fake-fur really isn't your thing, you can get a similar feel simply by adopting some leopard-print into your wardrobe. Leopard has been everywhere the last few months and it isn't going anywhere. Leopard has a sexiness without the overly-showiness of fake fur, but it still has that animal instinct that designers loved for winter.

Finally, ZARA launches online!

Shopaholics around the country let out a collective sigh of relief when it was announced this summer that popular high street retailer Zara would be launching its online shop this September.

The large majority of high street, and indeed various high-end brands, have long provided online shopping to accompany their retail outlets. Zara, and H&M were, for a long time, the two brands sticking out like sore thumbs in their lack of an internet base, frustrating shoppers around Europe as the chance of finding a coveted item was very limited as time to search through rails and rails of clothing was not always available.

Thankfully, the launching of the www.zara.com website has made finding that just-seen-in-Vogue trench a lot easier! The website is wonderfully simple to navigate, and the pictures provided show the items on real models: a problem with many sites is that the garments shown are simply photographed on a stand or on their own, so you have no idea how it might hang on a real body. The clothes are well categorised within the usual sub-headings, for example, ‘Jackets and Parkas’ and ‘T-Shirts’. It’s nothing snazzy, but it’s exactly what you need from a retailer whose clothes are famed, and therefore loved, for their usual stylish simplicity.

Alongside womenswear, the website has the Menswear, the Childrenswear and the TRF diffusion line collections, and also a monthly lookbook option which showcases some of the suggested outfits one can create with your purchases.

I personally have always really loved the collections that Zara produces each season, but I must confess that I often shy away from shopping there, as I have often found their stores to be under-stocked and with a very sparse selection of the styles available. I am most definitely not ashamed to admit that I have spent several (quite productive) hours browsing the website, and each time I have been looking for something specific; for example, the quirky equine printed dress above, £49.99, (which I had seen on a girl I stopped frantically on the street), I have been able to find it quickly and easily through the website with its simple navigation tools.

I am not all for turning to technology for helping with everything in our lives today, but my gosh this move to online shopping availability by Zara is most definitely an acceptable and happy use of the ever expanding techno-possibilities!

Equestrian Style - Riding On The Tails Of Fashion

Whilst competitive horse-riding has long been subject to a strict dress code, it appears riding wear has finally hit the catwalk and is becoming part of the celebrity endorsed bandwagon. When this means endorsement by world class equestrians, I wholly endorse it and welcome the coverage it brings to the sport. Will the suppliers of riding wear get the same kudos from the celebrity endorsement as the likes of Nike, I wonder.

This year, two high profile equestrian collections hit the shops.

Twenty nine year old Zara Phillips, 11th in line to the throne and granddaughter to the queen is collaborating with the well known supplier of sailing and country sports wear, Musto to produce a range of riding clothes. Her collection, Zara Phillips 176 incorporates her British Eventing number. She aims to produce a collection of stylish yet functional and technically superior riding wear that in her own words “ you wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in, in public."

Miss Phillips, who is engaged to rugby star, Mike Tindall modelled her collection in a photo shoot at the 12th century Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. Whilst she insists she is “no clothes horse”, she certainly looked stylish yet classic in this collection which was offset to perfection by the lovely location.

You can see Zara and Tina Cook talk about the range here:

The other celebrity, Katie Price, aka Jordon, the reality star and former glamour model and page three girl releases the fourth collection of KP Equestrian wear which focuses less on style and more on bringing 'real glamour and sparkle onto the yard'. To a point, she succeeds, sparkle definitely, glamour maybe but one thing this collections lacks is style. I don’t think this will be setting any trends for the discerning women and to wear fashion well, the wearer should always have a sense of style. That said the children’s range is meant to be incredibly popular with little girls who love ponies and sickly sweet colours.

Whilst Zara’s range is characterised by its classic colour scheme of red and black, Katie Price’s range is characterised by bubble gum pink with a mix of sparkly buttons and zip pulls as well as her signature silver trims and prints. KP Fashions features Jackets, T shirts , Hoodies, Sweats and Velour tracksuits as well as related childrens wear range.

Orange is the New Black

There was one central debate surrounding New York Fashion Week. Some declared that it was a catwalk of nudes, beiges and neutrals and that we should hang onto our camel coats and blush-coloured dresses for another few seasons. The others argued that it was a week of colour; bright, arrogant, achingly vivid colour. Well, neither are completely right, but then neither are ultimately wrong. Alexander Wang and Donna Karan adorned their catwalks with elegant white dresses, and hazy neutrals- oatmeal, khaki and terracotta. On the other hand, colour was everywhere. Marc Jacobs’s collection was a mass of 70s inspired acid-bright hues of yellows and orange and Hugo Boss also followed the new love of brights in his sunset-coloured collection.

Orange, it seems, is the colour of the next season.

Citrus colours though, admittedly, aren’t the easiest to wear. Most of us in English climes are far too pale to pull of such a strong hue- in fact, a choice between lurid orange or snowy white is like the devil and the deep blue sea for us English Roses. But never fear, Glamour has come to the rescue with their advice on wearing such a bright and intimidating colour.

They suggest keeping orange away from your skin. Don’t like the sound of an orange blouse? Try an orange skirt instead. Don’t want to commit too much to the trend, but still intrigued? Look for orange bags and accessories; sure to be everywhere in the next few months. But if you really want to go all out with orange, you need to pile on the confidence. The LOD (Little Orange Dress, of course!!) is a great way to showcase a summer tan (but be careful your tan doesn’t match your dress!!) and is more summery than red, but makes as much of a statement.

The catwalk makes orange seem incredibly accessible. Take inspiration from Marc Jacobs’ collection; he seems to incorporate orange into nearly every outfit. Think orange pinstripes, spots, or just choose a print that incorporates a little drop of the sunshine hue.

For me, it’s definitely about orange for next season. I love my neutrals and my wardrobe is fit to burst with the beautiful nude-coloured pieces I bought this last summer, but I’m excited to see a new and vibrant colour on the catwalk. And hey, this town is big enough for the both of them.

One for the boys

The androgynous look is timeless- Coco Chanel was doing it back in 1913, Diane Keaton made it cool again in 1977 in Annie Hall and today we have Rihanna and Alexa Chung doing it for the boys. Androgynous style is smart, sophisticated and more than anything else, completely sexy. But it can be intimidating. We’ve all thrown a last-minute blazer over a party dress when the skies cloud over, or snuggled up in a guy’s warm hoodie, but there is something about menswear inspired pieces that seem to require an innate confidence and sexuality.

But the menswear look is easy to imitate; just have a look at the Autumn/Winter 2010 collections for inspiration- Top Gun-style aviator jackets, long, loose trench coats, oxford brogues and braced trousers and shorts.

The trick is not to wear too much at once, and keep elements of your look girly and feminine. For example, pair a well-fitted but oversized blazer with a lace dress, or a sheer top with brace-shorts and oxfords. The look is as feminine as it is masculine; jackets shouldn’t be boxy and figure-consuming, but fitted and relaxed, trousers are high waisted, wide and leg-lengthening.

The two easiest pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe for a stylish, work-appropriate take on menswear are the oxford flat and a tailored blazer. Both pieces are interchangeable with others in your wardrobe; wear oxford shoes as you would ballet flats (they look especially good with knee- or ankle-length socks or bare ankles paired with cropped trousers) – I like them with girly floral dresses for a vintage-y look. A tailored blazer can be worn instead of a cardigan, leather jacket or coat- it is your perfect warm cover up for the autumn months.

Another idea is rather than getting menswear-inspired pieces to actually wear men’s clothes. Borrow oversized shirts from your dad and wear over skirts and shorts (denim shirts were especially cool this summer), steal your boyfriends cardigans and belt over leggings or peruse the men’s section in charity and vintage shops. Men’s tshirts also look adorable with leggings and sports-shoes for the understated, but sexy, sportwear luxe that was everywhere over summer.

If you don’t want to go overboard (while the look is fantastic head-to-toe it can be difficult to pull off), swap your plain white tee for a fitted white shirt or add braces to your shorts and skirts.
Men’s accessories can also be super-sexy- think Jennifer Aniston and the infamous vintage gold watch. Satchel bags were everywhere on the Autumn/Winter catwalks, try Topman and River Island for chunky boy’s accessories or borrow a beanie-hat for laid back cool.

The androgynous look is sexy and feminine. Wear with attitude and confidence whether you’re relaxing in baggy-boyfriend-Levis or commuting in a slick tuxedo suit and you’ll realise how easy this look is to incorporate into the every day.

Biba Launches At House Of Fraser

Yesterday was the launch or should we say relaunch of the Iconic brand Biba at House of Fraser. Biba began in the early sixties as a mail order company but grew to become the UK's first fashion and lifestyle store selling affordable and on trend clothes, accsessories and homeware and changing the face of British fashion in the sixties and seventies. In 1975 Biba closed its doors and it has been greatly missed since then. There was an unsuccessful venture to relaunch Biba as a high end label a few years ago. But now Biba is eventually going back to its roots in the British high street with its relaunch at House if Fraser.

The first collection in the range which is exclusive to House of Fraser has been modelled by Daisy Lowe who is a perfect match for the brand in terms of style and ethos. They hope to appeal to both mothers and their daughters with a glamourous look which takes a little of the brands history and adapts it for the modern women.

The collection includes opulent evening wear and some great daytime pieces. The highlights are a floor length tiger print maxi coat and bell sleeved mini dress with a beautiful print and plenty of beading, embellishment and faux fur. Prices are definitely at the high end of the high street spectrum but for such luxurious and glamorous pieces we think that they are well worth the investment.

The First Fan Funded Collection By Kate Eary @ Catwalk Genius

The first ever designer collection funded entirely by fans and designed by critical aclaimed men's wear designer Kate Eary is now on sale at Catwalk Genius. The collection which is part of  a scheme by Catwalk Genius that allows people to invest in collections by a designer giving them not only  a return on their investment (hopefully) but also the chance for some exclusive investor perks like an advance preview of the collection and chance to buy a piece before it goes on sale to the general public.

Kate Eary's collection contains just a few pieces in very limited numbers. The dresses, t shirts, tights and leotard all feature some very eyecatching photographic prints which are close ups of snakes and feathers. The collection is in keeping with her past menswear collections which have also attracted female followers like Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Courtney Love, Roisin Murphy and Sienna Miller and included bold statement prints, fusion of traditional tailoring with streetwear design details and macabre accessories.

In the video below Kate Eary talks to Catwalk Genius on becoming the first ever fan funded designer.

Henry Holland's next H! Collection for Debenhams

Henry Holland is about to release his second line for high street giant Debenhams, and quite frankly, I’m in love. Vogue posted the pieces from his new line on their website and on Twitter a few weeks ago (describing it as “witty, vibrant and fun”) and I couldn’t resist a peek.

The whole line is obviously warm and winter-appropriate, but with that Henry Holland touch which he describes as “happy grunge”. Earmuffs decorated to look like headphones, kitchy striped jumpers with animals peaking over the shoulder and a fabulous dove-grey fur coat at a budget-friendly £65, perfect for Winter.

Henry Holland said of his collections for Debenhams they are aimed at a much younger clientele than the usual ranges in the store and are much more wearable and accessible than his own House of Holland range but with his trademark, individual splashes. He envisions a creative wearing of his collection- layered and adventurous.

The pieces from the Autumn/Winter collection are perfect for a punky-but-cute winter look- nude shoe boots continue both the trend for camel and the love of ankle boots, as well as keeping your feet nice and warm for winter. I also have the biggest crush on the tartan cape. This little beauty will see you right through winter and ensure you stand out from the crowd!! Capes are massive for next season, especially with must-have elbow-length gloves to keep your arms warm!!

Other stand-out pieces:
The gorgeous army green gillet is both warm and practical, but in khaki it is a perfect way to work the military trend into your winter wardrobe. Wear with a long sleeved jumper for extra warmth. Similarly the headphone earmuffs will keep your ears toasty while ensuring you look snow-bunny cute.

The black bowler hat will have to channelling androgynous-chic down to a tee- wear with the cute brace-shorts for a really masculine yet girly look. If your style is much more feminine then perhaps the cutesy animal jumpers (think of the sell-out panda jumper last Christmas at Top Shop) or lips-print jumper-dress is more your thing. And don’t forget the accessories!! The satchel bag is this autumn’s bag of choice- roomy and stylish this back is practical as well as adorable. You can also show your love of the sporty trend from spring/summer with this stylish sports bag.

The tartan cape is my piece of choice, a real investment buy, but all the of pieces will inject a little excitement into your winter wardrobe. I am already looking forward to hot chocolate round the fire and snuggling up in my H! cape!!

Eco-Luxe: Not Just Hippie Fashion

To quote the iconic shoe-genius, Jimmy Choo, “Eco fashion is good for the soul”. Whilst there is no doubt the above is true, and eco-friendly fashion has long been undisputedly good for one’s conscience, it has long been considered the favoured dress of those of the more ‘hippie’ mindset. ‘Eco-friendly’ brings to mind smelly vegetable shoes and distinctly unflattering hemp based clothing.

Thankfully, this is most definitely no longer the case! As the population becomes ever more aware of the waste within all industries, increasingly more designers are consciously changing their sourcing of materials and production processes. Some, such as beautiful shoe label, Nina Dolcetti, were formed upon the brand ethos of “upcycling”; the using of pre-consumer waste to create truly beautiful shoes. The ‘Elevate’ flat platform shoe in two-tone nude suede and black Mock-croc became an instant bestseller, and proved straight away that ethical fashion labels are no longer the reserve of those with a penchant for rainbow coloured hemp patchwork, but was able to compete with established high-end labels on a luxury level.

Nina Dolcetti is just one of the 28 designers who show as part of the British Fashion Council’s Estethica collective at London Fashion week. Brainchild of Orsola de Castro, owner of the eco-luxe clothing and accessories label and boutique, From Somewhere, Estethica made its first appearance at LFW in 2007, and has grown from just 13 designers to the initiative it is now.

Other designers showing as part of Estethica this September include gorgeous Finnish designer, Minna; whose dresses use ethically sourced and upcycled lace to beautiful effect; and funky upcycling label Goodone with designer Nin Castle’s amazing panelled bodycon garments, created from upcycled jersey pieces and cable knits in wonderful colour combinations. Just like Nina Dolcetti, these designers prove that eco-friendly fashion most definitely does have a place competing with the conventional high-end designers. Alongside this is the added bonus of knowing that your beautiful clothes haven’t harmed, and may even have helped, the environment during their making, they are likely to feel even more gorgeous.

Emma Watson To Launch New Collection

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson is to launch her new eco-clothing range People Tree at Prince Charles' 'A Garden Party to make a Difference'. The event, which will be held on September 11th, is a 12 day eco-festival organised by Prince Charles' Charities and will be on between the 8th-19th September. The festival has come about in an attempt to help people and their businesses work towards a sustainable future, and will include music provided by Jools Holland, comedy from Ben Elton and Alistair McGowan, as well as various fashion and food stalls. The new collection is actually Emma's third for the People Tree brand, and despite Emma launching the brand on the 11th, she won't be at the event due to a collision with her studies at Brown University in New York so will instead introduce the show via video message.

Talking about the new collection, Miss Watson says, "I'm so thrilled that People Tree will be showing the spring/summer collection at 'A Garden Party to make a Difference'. I think the Prince of Wales's initiative is such a brilliant idea." The actress-turned-model-turned-designer started up her ethical clothing range after becoming increasingly annoyed at the lack of "humanitarian alternatives to fast fashion", and as a result she flew out to Bangladesh to visit the slum homes of the people who work at the clothing factories- and where the collection she endorses is made. She even had a go at the hard work and helped the women with the sewing. Despite not actually being directly involved in the designing of the clothes, she did select the Fair Trade textiles she wanted to use including cable knits and hand-woven checked shirts.
