How to Prepare for a Career in Fashion

We all know that the idea of a career in fashion can be daunting. The media tells us that the fashion industry is glamourous, exciting and well, scary (have you seen The Devil Wears Prada?!) But for some of us, that fear is enough to handle for our dream career, the question on our lips is, how on earth do I get involved in working in the fashion industry?
Enter Stephanie Finnan with her fantastic book How to prepare for a career in fashion.
The focus of this book is in the title; preparation. This is not a quick-fix guide. This is practical advice for those willing to work hard and how to put this hard work into action. There are no interviews with people whose Dad's-best-friend's-brother's-boss knew someone who worked at Vogue and bam they were in. This is for real people who just want an opportunity to do what they love, and get paid for it. The book is described as “easy to follow” and consists of “tips on what you should be doing now and how to stay one step ahead of everyone else.” It is an exciting premise.
The book is organized into clear sections, beginning with a general Q&A about fashion careers and then entering into different chapters depending on which area of fashion you're interested in going into. The final few chapters are dedicated to general advice on work experience, useful resources and a helpful little glossary.
Stephanie covers almost every aspect of fashion you could ever be interested in; Design, Graphic/Textile Design, Trend Forecasting, Styling, Fashion Journalism, Make-Up, Fashion Marketting/PR, Fashion Buying, Visual Merchandising, Production and Technical and Fashion Show Production. There literally is something for everyone.
For me, my first flick was too Fashion Journalism, as this is the career I hope to pursue. Each chapter is organized in the same, easy to read form. It begins with a job profile and essential information- all the important things you want to know, from the best things about the job, to the skills you'll need, educational achievements required to of course, how much you'll get paid. Each chapter then has an interview or two with someone who actually works in the job you dream about, with helpful advice and stories, an ask-the-expert page, tailored specifically to each job, and perhaps most importantly, a To Do list of things to get on with to help your chances of landing this career.
The final sections on work experience and resources are particularly helpful to a young journalist like me. Magazines and newspapers and notoriously overloaded with students begging for experience. There are four pages of questions and answers on work experience here, which is wide-ranging without being too general.
I was really impressed with this book. The tone and layout was informal and fun, making it an enjoyable read as well as a fabulous resource for anyone, whether you're still in school, working on a degree, or just fancy a change of career. Stephanie makes no bones about the fact that getting into the industry is hard, but thanks to this book I feel much more confident that I am on the route to success. Let me just double check that To Do list...

Po-Zu Ethical Footwear AW10

For the first time Po-Zu’s entire Autumn-Winter shoe collection is online. The collection of natural and ethically produced footwear with a topsy-turvy theme is displayed on Po-zu.com.

Warm in even the coldest weather, Po-Zu winter shoes are also breathable. This is achieved by lining them with bio-based materials, which are naturally thermal, such as unbleached and undyed pure felt wool and vegetable tanned sheepskin. This season Po-Zu also treats tweed, felt and sheepskin shoes with an eco-friendly water-resistant coating. Waxed suede shoes are treated with coconut shoe cream to improve water resistance.

The women’s Piper boot is a new, taller version of the old favourite style Pep. With lacing at the back, the shaft become fully adjustable to provide a snug, perfect fit. The vegetarian Joy and Yew styles now come in elegant mixed-colour tweeds with fine blotched-pattern.

As for the men’s range, there is a new Chelsea boot called Che,that has a unique elasticated gusset moulded in natural latex, embossed with the repeat pattern of the Po-Zu butterfly. It’s a refreshing alternative to the typical synthetic woven elastic and is also longer lasting. Technically speaking, the entire range comes with the Butterfly Suspension Mechanism at the heel; it softens the impact as the foot hits the ground. Sandwiched between the sole and the inner-sock lies Po-Zu’s unique coconut fiber ‘foot-mattress’. This dream mattress gradually moulds to the shape of your feet, making them feel incredibly rested.

Po-Zu was launched in 2006 with the aim of setting new standards in ecological and ethical footwear manufacturing. Its shoes are made from carefully selected natural materials that are healthy for your feet, safe for all the workers throughout the supply chain, and kind to the environment. By stitching all the components together, Po-Zu avoids harmful glues, making its shoes more breathable, durable, repairable and recyclable.

The brand’s other prime purpose is to provide maximum comfort. The experience of walking or even standing in Po-Zu shoes is absolute pleasure. Thanks to its unique ‘foot-mattress’ feet feel incredibly rested. The coir ‘foot-mattress’ also provides great air circulation to keep feet dry, and good insulation from both hot and cold climates. Po-Zu’s original shoebox was nominated for the UK Green Awards 2006, for best packaging.

The biodegradable coconut box can be used as trays to grow seeds. As the plant grows, the entire packaging can be planted into the ground where it eventually decomposes into the earth. Following its commitment to produce products that are as non-toxic as possible, Po-Zu launched in 2007 a shoe cream that is so safe it can be eaten. Apart from treating leather, the Edible Shoe Cream is also an all-in-one beauty product that can be used as a lip balm, skin moisturizer, hair conditioner, massage oil and cooking oil. It can even be spread on toast for a nutritious snack.

I have found some lovely Christmas jumpers online,That I thought i would share with you all.
However, were not ten anyone more ;) even though they do look rather comfy. Here are some lovely outfit ideas for Christmas this year.

Shearling Boots for Cosy Toes

There is always a conundrum this time of year regarding footwear. To heel, or not to heel? Some ladies are never out of their stilettos, and winter comes in a panic of “do I cave and buy some flats?” , “how high a heel can I wear?” and “what happens if it snows?”
I am a flat-shoe girl through and through, but with aspirations to one day be a day-in-day-out heel-wearer like my mum. I was feeling pretty set with my winter shoe collection- suede ankle boots, leather ankle boots, tan boots, obligatory knee-highs and of course, my faithful Uggs. Until last weekend. I walked into an outlet mall and fell in love.
They were tan, lace up and with a high, but comfortable to walk in heel. And most importantly, a shock of shearling laced the top. It was love at first sight.
We've all enjoyed the last few snuggly months of our aviator jacket. Just wearing one makes you feel as though you've stepped off the Burberry catwalk. And Burberry is the designer on on everyone's lips this season. And the only thing better than a lovely warm jacket is a pair of lovely warm shoes. Because when have a pair of warm and comfortable shoes ever been stylish? Don't get me wrong, I love my Uggs, but I do always feel a little, well, ugly, in them. Shearling boots are the perfect equilibrium between warmth and style.
Shearling, in case you're wondering, is a natural fleece made from wool and it's snuggly as hell. And if there's one word I love at this time of year it's snuggly.
These lovely shearling hiking boots can be found in a huge variety of colours and styles. There are flat lace up boots with a shearling trim (New Look have a fab pair), calf-length shearling boots (see Urban Outfitters for their multistrap boot), clog-style, wedges and even Ugg themselves have brought out a style!! I personally love tans and blacks, but you can find them in khaki via ASOS and greys are perfect for a go-with-everything style.
They are a slight evolution from the military boots we all stomped around in over summer, but much warmer and cosier. Burberry's offering are of course in the thousands, but many high street stores have fabulous alternatives. Have a look at New Look, River Island, Next and Boohoo for some great imitations, and rejoice in cosy feet for the winter!!

Fashion and Social Media - You Can Now Have Your Say

Have you ever looked at the latest fashions coming off the catwalk and heaved a sigh of dismay, wondering why they can’t design fashions for people like you? Things are changing – no longer can an elite group of couture designers shape and dictate fashion for everyone. A revolution is happening. Fashion is becoming more democratic, thanks in no small part to social media such as Face book and Twitter and the rise of independent fashion bloggers, who are becoming a force to be reckoned with. An increasing recognition of ethical fashion and the need for more plus size fashion has undoubtedly been consumer led.

At the forefront of this trend is The Shopping Forecast, a unique fashion forum which allows consumers to see, share, vote and comment on next season’s lines. The Shopping Forecast provides a link between the buyers of fashion, and professional store fashion buyers and a clothes competition for users of the site. The selected outfits that viewers vote on are chosen by “The Style Council” whose members are predominantly independent fashion bloggers with no financial interest in the big couture houses or large retail outlets who have previously dictated fashion. Could the Shopping Forecast lead the way to a genuine change in the way the fashion industry operates – fashion by the people, for the people!

Listening to consumers improves the bottom line. And fashion industry is a business like any other so this is a compelling argument to encourage more customer feedback. Earlier this year, Marc Jacobs CEO Robert Duffy received a large amount of Twitter feedback from customers who wanted plus sizes. His response was to tweet back to the company's more than 26,000 followers, "We gotta do larger sizes … As soon as I get back to NY I'm on it,". This is clear evidence that designers are listening to the fans and no long operating solely for the elite fashionistas in their ivory towers.

Struggling retailer Ann Taylor saw a saw a 16% rise in same-store sales for the second quarter of 2010. Analysts have attributed this to the company's vigorous use of social media for helping to lure new customers. In response to criticism of a skinny model wearing a new pair of pants on its face book site, the company responded by posting new photos of employees of a range of sizes wearing the product. The feedback from customers was remarkably positive.

It is not just big fashion houses and retailers, who are utilising the internet and social media to sell fashion. The internet and viral marketing using sites such as Face book and Twitter has made it cheaper and easier for small independent fashion retailers to sell their products and to get customer feedback without having to pay for costly professional market research. Leading the way, ASOS marketplace is now accepting applications to open boutiques in the Marketplace from Fashion designers, Independent labels, and Vintage resellers. More choice for the consumer means more opportunity to make their own decisions about what sort of fashions they want including the ethical trend for recycling clothes. Fashion is no longer about buying all the right labels but producing a stylish mix of high and low pieces and the move towards a more democratic Fashion industry is part of this trend.

In keeping with the move to a more democratic industry, it seems the size zero vs real women debate is starting to be taken more seriously. Online plus size mall One Stop Plus made history this year as September saw the first ever “plus-size only” show showcased during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York.

However, it is one thing listening to your customer’s opinions to try and improve business, but one designer has taken it a step further. British fashion designer Katie Eary has launched the first ever fan-funded clothing. All of the shares for the collection have sold out which has created fashion history! The Katie Eary collection at Catwalk Genius went on sale in September. With investments from as little as £11, part ownership of a collection by a designer you like seems the ultimate way to influence the fashion industry!

Whether this move towards fashion democracy is permanent remains to be seen but with the advent of social media and the internet, it seems unlikely to change. Customers are, at last, able to make themselves heard and any business would be stupid to ignore them.

Sweater Dresses for A/W 2010

This Fall, I bring to you the latest trend. Sweater dresses!
I must say that I am a little excited, they look some comfortable yet so stylish, when does that ever happen? and there are so many styles out there to choose from.
Here are just some of the many out there.

Stripe sweater dress, Urban Outfitters

You could opt for a chunky knit dress, made by wool and cotton, this is perfect for casual wear.Or you could go sleeveless for a great look as seen in the last picture.

The stripe dress as seen in the first picture would be great for a party, team it up with high heel boots, and cute accessories.

Sweater dresses go perfectly with knee high socks, which is also a massive trend this fall. Play it safe with some black knee high socks.
Buy here
Floral pattern's would go lovely with a plan black or grey sweater dress.

Grey, would go with almost any sweater dress, these are lovely with a cute frill.

Fur is a big hit with sweater dresses, personally I'd rather team them up with boots, tights if it's really cold and some accessories.

There is definatly a sweater dress for every occasion, whether it be partying or even casual to work.
What are your favorites? will you be purchasing a sweater dress this year?

Mulberry for Target

After weeks of anticipation, it was finally time. It felt like months ago that we'd heard the whispered rumours, and part of us still couldn't believe it was true. We parked the car and ran into the store.
The Mulberry for Target bags were here.
As a British girl living in America, I could barely contain my excitement when I found out about the collaboration. A Mulberry bag for less than £40? Are you serious? I gabbled my excitement to my America friends, who greeted me with a luck of confusion. Who are these Mulberry folks anyway?
According to their website, Mulberry is “inspired by the cool of the city and the craft of the countryside” and was started in 1971 Mulberry is an iconic British brand, but like other huge British brands (Burberry for example), their prowess doesn't seem to extend across the pond.
This isn't the first big name to have a small, affordable collection for Target. Their previous collaborations have included Anna Sui, Liberty of London, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen (!!!) Could you imagine the chaos if this were to take place in the UK? I'm pretty sure there'd be riots!!
Four of the bags were pre-released back in August via Gild Group and were first introduced into stores on 8th October. Despite there being 18 bags in the collection, SheFinds reported on the 11th August that there were only 3 bags left online, and there will be no second delivery.
Emma Hill, creative director for Mulberry, described the brand in an interview with Target as “laid-back, nostalgic and eclectic, with a healthy dose of quirkiness and English spirit.”
The bags are all affordable, using PVC and other materials instead of real leather and are priced between $15 and $50 (£9.36- £31.19).
I was lucky. I'm in a small, midwestern town where most people wouldn't know the Alexa bag if it came and hit them over the head, but even when we arrived, a few days after the bags went on sale, there were only a few left. I managed to get my hands on the gorgeous pink leopard print bag, and grabbed two more for Christmas presents. The bags are fantastic, and I think it is naïve of bloggers to criticize their quality, I mean where else will I get a Mulbery bag for cheaper than dinner in a fancy restaurant? I only regret not buying them all...

Lingerie Shopping - Online

I must admit that I am a total sucker for pretty underwear, and lovely, delicate sets are definitely always high on my wish list. Alongside this, I can’t deny that the undisputedly best way to chose and buy underwear is most definitely in a shop in person, as every single different make will have a slight variation within it’s size and shape ranges, no matter how similar they may be to look at. These differences mean that the only way to really know whether the lingerie is perfect for you is to take the time to try it on and check the fit.

However, having said all that, with peoples’ lives becoming increasingly frantic and full, sometimes the internet is the only place to look for shopping of all kinds when the only time you have is late in the evening. A lot of popular high street retailers have their ranges online, which means browsing to save you time when you do get to the shops is one option, but another choice is the online only lingerie retailers. Larger sites, such as www.miodestino.co.uk, and www.glamorousamorous.com stock a huge variety of styles, colours and price ranges and often have brands that are hard to find on the high street, or indeed brands that only retail online.

Both of these sites deliver quickly, and at a decent price, with decent return policies, meaning that, although you are spending money on delivery, you can try on a whole variety of lingerie in the comfort of your own home, and with whichever outfits you want (often a problem when out shopping!). The sites also have a range of both British and international brands, many of which you won’t find in shops, and it’s a fantastic place to discover new styles and trends you might not come across in the mainstream high-street.

My personal favourite brand, which also has it’s own website, is Fleur of England (previously called Fleur T). This gorgeous brand, based in Bristol, stocks in various boutiques across the country, but is mainly available online. Ever so slightly above the average budget, Fleur’s gorgeously feminine lingerie, in all kinds of beautiful shades, is most definitely worth saving up for. Find Fleur online at www.fleurofengland.com.

Cosy Knits for A/W 2010

Obviously for the cool autumn/winter season there are going to be knits on the catwalk. And if you're anything like me, you take no notice and stick to the simple black jumpers and plain cardigans you've been wearing every winter since god-knows-when. But perhaps this year your knits need updating. And there's plenty of inspiration to do it.

One big trend this season is the chunky, cable knit jumper. This style just screams winter; it's cosy and cute and doesn't have to cost a fortune. Top Shop have some great cable knits and even smaller, cheaper stores like Peacocks give them a run for their money. These chunky knits can come in the form of long jumpers for with tights or leggings, cardigans (which look fab belted- a look that was all over the A/W10 catwalk) or short jumpers for with jeans or shorts.

Belted knits were a big trend. Most of us are a bit nervous around both chunky knits and layered knits as they have a habit of looking bulky, but a skinny belt can give you a sleeker silhouette while still keeping you warm.

Knits came in two varieties this season; the simple and the patterned. Simple jumpers and cardigan came in blocks colours; nudes and creams were still in to complement the nude items we all went wild for during the spring/summer season, but other neutrals like greys and blacks were still big. If you want a little more fun, though, cardigans in autumnal colours like maroon, mustard and navy will work fantastically over the summer dresses you can't bear to part with yet, and also avoid the dark, dismal wardrobe syndrome that often comes this time of year.

Fun prints involved the fair-isle and nordic prints. These have a kind of nerdy-fun feel to them which makes them completely irresistible. Wear with a hint of irony. Fair-Isle patterned gloves, scarves and hats were also a big thing if you don't want to commit to an all-over print.

The animal jumpers that were huge last year (remember the sold-out Top Shop panda jumper?) are still around, so snatch one up as soon as you can. They look great over-sized with jeans or leggings and boots. River Island also have a selection of fun animal accessories, such as hats, gloves and scarves.

If you really want to go wild this autumn/winter (and keep super-snug), then head-to-toe knits were a popular choice on the catwalk. Try knitted shorts or trousers with a cardigan for the ultimate in cosy-chic.

The Future Of Ethical Footwear

Whilst there is plenty of talk about the environmental and ethical impact of the clothes that we wear including the use of pesticides to grow cotton, the energy intensive manufacture of synthetic fabrics and the fast fashion culture which commits thousands of tonnes of textile waste to landfill, we often forget about our shoes and footwear which is just as essential to every day life as clothing and has just as much impact.

The majority of shoes are made from either leather or synthetic materials both of which have huge environmental impacts. Leather is usually tanned using a process which causes damage to the health of the people involved and to the surrounding environment. The tanning uses chemicals including lead, zinc, formaldehyde, dyes and cyanide-based chemicals. Shoes are also often glued together using benzene which is highly toxic and damaging to the health of the workers. Synthetic materials are usually not biodegradable making them difficult to dispose of and also sometimes contain toxic chemicals like phthalates which are damaging to health and the environment in a number of ways. So how is likely is it that there will be more ethical footwear available in the future?

Well there are already a number of companies which specialise in ethical footwear and manufacture shoes using a variety of materials and methods which have a lesser impact on the environment. Po Zu Ecological shoes makes shoes using a variety of natural materials including cork, organic hemp, natural latex, coconut husk and vegetable tanned leather. They using stitching instead of glue to make the shoes and the factory follows strict ethical guidelines. The shoes are made to for comfort and durability so that they should have a long life span but when their useful life is over they easily biodegrade.

Brands like Po-Zu Ethical Footwear are taking big steps forward in the manufacture of ethical footwear but there is still a long way to go in finding the perfect ethical and eco friendly material to make the shoes from. Whilst vegan shoes materials like hemp and cork are both incredibly sustainable, they are unlikely to ever replace leather which is favoured for its appearance and durability. Vegetable tanned leather is a better alternative than conventionally tanned leather but still has an environmental impact associated with the rearing of animals and for many there are ethical issues surrounding the welfare of the animals.

One of the changes that would help the growth of ethical footwear would be change in attitude to the buying of footwear. Footwear can be considered as part of the ‘fast fashion culture’ and ‘throw away society’ where low cost shoes are purchased in line with the current trends and thrown away after a few wears. The second hand market for shoes is even less than with clothes. If people could consider an investment which they will keep for many years to come then they may not mind paying a little extra to ensure both quality and that the shoes have been ethically manufactured. The longer life span of shoes would then cut down on waste.

There are a number of potential materials that could be used to make ethical footwear and shoes in the future although there is still some way to go before these materials become completely commercially viable. The ideal material would need to be strong, breathable, durable and look great when made into shoes.

Fish leather is one possible solution. It is made using fish skin which is a by product of the fish industry and it is also really strong. The tanning process also does not use toxic chemicals. At the moment, it is mainly used for products like purses. Ocean leather is another possible solution which is made from kelp but is still in the very early stages of development.

Pixie Lott Launches Her Second Lipsy Collection

Pop Princess Pixie Lott unveiled her second collection for Lipsy this week, following the success of her Spring/Summer collection. Her first collection featured both “Pixie Festival” and “Pixie Party”; showcasing two sides of her fun and unique style. Her second collection follows the same theme with “Pixie Rocks”- an edgy, black-laced collection of studs and embellishments, and another instalment of her Pixie Party evening-wear range.

Her Pixie Festival collection featured pretty vintage-style cotton dresses mixed with on-trend denim shorts and knee socks, while her first Pixie Party collection was a summery mix of prints and embellished shift dresses.

Her new collections have a similarly on-trend but completely wearable vibe.

The Pixie Rocks collection is my favourite. A gorgeous mix of sexy, edgy rock-chick pieces with a fun edge. Think halter corset tops, fun catsuits and playsuits (of course, in gorgeous black) and lots of leather and studs, mixed in with pretty lace dresses, girly baby-dolls and the sexy lace smock dress which Pixie herself wore to the launch (it comes in white too, fashion fans!!). The collection also features a gorgeous faux fur jacket, perfect for the coming winter months.

The Pixie Party collection is very cute, with that sexy and fun Lipsy vibe in the form of strapless bandeau dresses and baby-dolls, bright prints and on-trend nudes. The animal print dress would be perfect for Christmas parties.

Pixie's new collections have a perfect mix of day and night, and dresses and outwear. Her statement girly style is perfectly represented with a rock-chick edge. Yet the whole collection is also Lipsy all over.
Lipsy has always been a fantastic brand and has been growing all over the country with its stand-alone stores. While slightly more expensive than the standard high-street, it has that designer feel to it, and its stores all feel like independent boutiques with their plush changing rooms and photos on celebrities in their designers lining the walls.

There are definitely many pieces in this collection that are completely wearable and perfect for a tight budget. I am looking forward to seeing more designs from Pixie; who doesn't love her sunshine smile and perfectly put-together look? I'm sure a few of the items from her collection will end up in my online basket.
